Thin Rib, Northwood

There are two sizes of Northwood Thin Rib vases. Standard size and midsize (there are no funeral sizes). The standard size has nine ribs. There were at least four different molds used for the standard size and base diameters range from 3 3/8 inches to 3 3/4 inches. Heights range from 6 1/2 to 11 inches. The Jester's Cap, with one point pulled up, is scarce. The midsize Thin Rib has eight ribs and a base diameter of 4 3/4 inches. Most are 12 to 15 inches in height. The jardiniere, shown on the right with a midsize in aqua opal, is rare.

Thin Rib Jester's Cap versions

A few standard size Northwood Thin Rib vases were given a top treatment called a Jester's Cap. The vase was swung, the tops of the ribs were rolled out, and down. Then one rib was pulled back up. The one rib evidently didn't get pulled back up on the green vase above. (It is the only example I know of where that happened.) A Jester's Cap is a very different top treatment than a Jack-in-the-Pulpit, where one side is pulled down, with the other side up, and can be found on many types of glass. The Jester's Cap was a uniquely Northwood vase top treatment. A few standard size Tree Trunks can be found with Jester's Caps.
