Scroll Embossed, Imperial   Updated 1/31/2009    More
Above is the dramatic Scroll Embossed plate. This one has colors seemingly applied to individual loops. Many have the same stretch effect seen near the edge of this one. The ruffled bowl on the right has the File exterior and is smoke. Bowls commonly have this back pattern or may be plain or carry the Hobstar and Tassle back. Bowls have been reproduced. Sowerby made an almost identical Scroll Embossed used on the interior of Diving Dolphins bowls and rosebowls as well as small sauces or ashtrays.

Scroll Embossed compotes are found in three sizes. The large size, shown above left with the Eastern Star exterior, has an octagonal foot. It is also seen with a plain or File exterior. The middle size, above right, usually referred to as small, has a round foot and only a plain exterior. The smallest size (below), called a miniature as it is a little more than three inches tall, also has a round foot and plain exterior, usually round but occasionally ruffled.

In 2003, Tim Turner sent me the above photo of an Imperial Scroll Embossed goblet in helios. The only other I've heard of was listed as green and sold for $55 in 2002. Carl O. Burns, in his 1996 book on Imperial, confirms such a shape.
