Smoke

Article on color smoke

We tend to think of the Carnival smoke color as a neutral gray over a clear glass--much like a color made by letting the smoke from a candle color the surface. In reality, smoke can be overshot with a number of other colors ranging from blues to greens to yellows. The two pitchers above suggest the range of hues seen in smoke. The Fieldflower looks almost purple while the Fashion appears brown.

Imperial made almost all the smoke, but the odd piece is seen in Northwood and Fenton. Northwood and Fenton smoke are usually on a smoke-colored base glass, like the ruffled Peacocks bowls at the left and the Stag and Holly bowl above.
